Figure description

A DC current source I (arrow pointing up) sits on the left branch between the bottom rail and the top rail. A power MOSFET with its antiparallel body diode is connected from the top-rail node (drain) to the bottom rail (source) in the middle branch. From the same top node, a series diode points to the right (anode at the node, cathode toward the right) and connects to the positive terminal of a DC voltage source V (+ at the top). The negative terminal of V connects to the bottom rail. When the MOSFET is ON it shorts the current source; when OFF the current I flows through the diode into V.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The power delivered by the current source is 90 W.

Official answer: 90Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. The MOSFET is on for the duty ratio and off for of each switching cycle. The source is an ideal current source, so its current is at every instant. Let be the voltage across it, which is the voltage of the top node.

  2. MOSFET ON: the switch connects the top node to the bottom rail, so . The series diode has its cathode at and its anode at , so it is reverse biased. No current reaches , and the source delivers .

  3. MOSFET OFF: the current has no path through the switch, so it flows through the series diode into . The diode conducts and, being ideal, drops no voltage, so . The source delivers during this interval.

  4. Average voltage across the current source over one cycle:

  5. Since is constant, the average power delivered by the source is This agrees with .

  6. Check: the average current into is , so the power absorbed by is . With ideal devices there is no loss, so this equals the power from the source.

KEY IDEA

A current source has constant current, so its average power is I times the average voltage across it. That voltage is 0 while the MOSFET is on and V while the MOSFET is off, so the average is (1-D)V.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using D instead of 1-D, which gives 0.4 x 15 x 10 = 60 W. The diode conducts, and the source sees V, only during the off time, 1-D = 0.6. Another slip is to take 15 V x 10 A = 150 W as the answer without averaging over the on interval, when the source is shorted.
