In the DC-DC converter shown in the figure, the current through the inductor is continuous. The switching frequency is 500 Hz. The voltage () across the load is assumed to be constant and ripple free. The peak inductor current in amperes is __________ (rounded off to the nearest integer).

Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Boost-type circuit. A DC source V_i = 20 V has its + terminal at the top, feeding the inductor current I_i (arrow to the right) into an inductor L = 2 mH in the top rail. The switch S is connected from the node after the inductor down to the bottom rail (ground). From the same node a diode is placed in series in the top rail, anode toward the inductor and cathode toward the output. The output has a capacitor across the output with V_o = 40 V (+ at top, - at bottom) in parallel with a 10 Ω load resistor. The load current I_o flows to the right and down through the resistor. The bottom rail is common to the source, switch, capacitor and load.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The peak inductor current is 13 A.

Official answer: 13Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. The inductor is in series with the source, the switch connects the node after the inductor to the bottom rail, and the diode leads to the output capacitor and load. This is a boost converter, so .

  2. Duty ratio: , so and .

  3. Load current: .

  4. The converter is taken as lossless, so . The input current is the average inductor current: . This is the same as .

  5. Period: . While is ON the inductor voltage is , and the ON time is . The peak-to-peak ripple is

  6. Peak inductor current: .

  7. The minimum inductor current is , which confirms that conduction is continuous, as the question states.

KEY IDEA

In a boost converter the average inductor current equals the input current, . The peak is that average plus half the ripple, where the ripple is and comes from .

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the average inductor current as the load current (4 A) instead of the input current (8 A). Another slip is using the full period instead of the ON time in the ripple formula, or reporting the peak-to-peak ripple (10 A) as the peak current.
