Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Plot of inductor current (A, vertical axis) against time (µsec, horizontal axis). The current is a periodic triangular wave between a minimum of 12 A and a maximum of 16 A (both marked with dotted guide lines). It rises linearly from 12 A to 16 A over an interval marked 20 µs, then falls linearly from 16 A back to 12 A over an interval marked 30 µs; the waveform continues before and after (shown by dots).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The output capacitor is .

  1. Read the waveform: the inductor current rises from to in (switch on) and falls back in (diode on). So and the duty ratio is .

  2. The inductor current is a triangular wave between and , so its average is .

  3. In a buck-boost converter the inductor current reaches the output only through the diode during the off time. The average output current is therefore .

  4. While the switch is on, the diode is off and the capacitor alone supplies the load current for . The charge it loses is .

  5. The peak-to-peak output ripple equals this charge divided by the capacitance: .

  6. Setting gives .

  7. Check over the off interval: the capacitor charges with , whose average is over . The charge gained is , equal to the charge lost, as required in steady state.

KEY IDEA

In a buck-boost converter the load current is the diode current averaged over the whole period, . During the on time the capacitor alone supplies this current, so the ripple is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the full inductor average as the load current gives . Only the diode (off-time) portion, , reaches the output. Another slip is using instead of for the discharge interval.
