Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A four-arm resistive bridge drawn as a diamond, with top node T, bottom node Bot, left node L and right node Rt. Every arm is a variable resistor (a zig-zag crossed by a vertical arrow, like a strain gauge). The arrow points up on the R + ΔR arms and down on the R - ΔR arms. Arm T-L: R + ΔR. Arm T-Rt: R - ΔR. Arm L-Bot: R - ΔR. Arm Rt-Bot: R + ΔR. A voltage source V_in on the left has its + terminal on top. Its + terminal is wired to the top node T and its - terminal to the bottom node Bot, so V_in is applied across T-Bot. The right node Rt is wired to terminal A. The left node L is wired to terminal B by a wire that runs right, steps down, and passes over the lead of the lower-right arm through a crossover arc (not a junction) before stepping down to B. A goes to the + (non-inverting) input of an instrumentation amplifier labelled INA, and B goes to its - (inverting) input. The INA has supply rails V_CC (top) and -V_EE (bottom) and output V_out. Answer and solution

ANSWER

The equivalent resistance between A and B is .

Official answer: 4Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. An ideal INA has infinite input resistance, so it draws no current and does not load terminals A-B. The equivalent resistance is therefore that of the bridge alone, seen between A (the right node) and B (the left node).

  2. To find the equivalent resistance, deactivate the independent source. The ideal voltage source is replaced by a short circuit, which joins the top node T and the bottom node Bot into a single node.

  3. From B (left node) to the merged T/Bot node, the two left arms are in parallel: Numerically this is .

  4. From A (right node) to the merged T/Bot node, the two right arms are also in parallel: Numerically this is .

  5. The two parallel pairs are in series through the merged node:

  6. Substitute and : This agrees with the numerical check .

  7. The result is already an integer, so rounding changes nothing: .

KEY IDEA

Seen from the detector diagonal (A-B), with the excitation source shorted, a Wheatstone bridge is two parallel pairs in series: . Each pair is the two arms that meet at one detector node. An ideal INA draws no input current, so it does not appear in the result.

WATCH OUT FOR

Opening the voltage source instead of shorting it. The two paths from A to B are then each , and in parallel they give , which rounds to 5, not the key's 4. An ideal voltage source must be replaced by a short circuit. A second slip is to include a finite INA input resistance in parallel with the bridge. An ideal INA has infinite input resistance.
