GATE 2023 EC question 32: Three-node ladder with a common bottom (ground) rail.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three-node ladder with a common bottom (ground) rail. Top-left node A joins four branches. (1) Leftmost branch, from A down to ground: a 2 V independent voltage source with its + terminal at the top (towards A), in series with a 2 kΩ resistor below it that goes to the ground rail. (2) A 2 kΩ resistor from A straight down to ground. (3) An independent 1 mA current source from ground up to A (arrow pointing up, i.e. injecting 1 mA into A). (4) From A to the right: a 1 kΩ resistor to node B, with an independent 1 mA current source connected in parallel with this 1 kΩ, drawn above it, arrow pointing right (from A towards B). From node B a wire goes right and down through a 200 Ω resistor to the ground rail; the current i is marked on this wire flowing downward through the 200 Ω resistor.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 1.30 to 1.40Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Take the bottom rail as ground. Call the top-left node (voltage ) and the node at the right end of the resistor (voltage ). Work in volts, and .

  2. Source transformation on the left: the source (+ towards ) in series with becomes a source into in parallel with .

  3. Combine everything between and ground: the currents add, into (the transformed source plus the upward source), and the resistances combine, . Back to Thevenin form, that is behind .

  4. Source transformation on the source in parallel with the resistor between and : it becomes a source in series with . The current source pushes current towards , so the + terminal is on the side: a rise of going from to , which adds to the .

  5. That leaves one loop: behind , driving the load.

  6. Check by nodal analysis (currents leaving each node). KCL at : . KCL at : . Substituting, , so , and .

  7. Rounded to two decimal places, .

KEY IDEA

Use repeated source transformation. Everything between node and ground reduces to behind . The source across the becomes a series source whose + terminal faces . That leaves a single loop: across . Two-node nodal analysis gives the same result.

WATCH OUT FOR

Getting the polarity of the transformed source wrong. A current source pointing from to becomes a voltage source with its + terminal at , so it adds to the . Subtracting it gives . A second trap is dropping the upward source when combining the branches at , which gives .
