    20 kHz sine wave

  2. (B)

    20 kHz square wave

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The ideal low-pass filter passes only the 20 kHz fundamental. Every harmonic, the first at 60 kHz, is above the 21 kHz cut-off and is removed, so the output is a 20 kHz sine wave. Option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Fourier series of a square wave. A symmetric square wave that swings between and with fundamental frequency contains only odd harmonics:

  2. Frequencies present. With , the spectral lines sit at , , (plus a DC term only if the wave has an offset, for example one that swings between and ).

  3. What an ideal LPF does. An ideal low-pass filter with cut-off passes every component with unchanged, apart from at most a constant delay, and removes everything above the cut-off completely.

  4. What gets through. Only the fundamental gets through, because . The next harmonic is at , so the filter removes it and every higher harmonic. The conclusion does not depend on the square wave being symmetric: any periodic signal with fundamental has its harmonics at and above, which are all beyond the cut-off.

  5. Output. This is one sinusoid at , raised by the DC level if the square wave has one. The output is therefore a 20 kHz sine wave, which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

A periodic signal is a sum of sinusoids at whole-number multiples of its fundamental. An ideal LPF keeps only the components below its cut-off. If the cut-off lies between and the next harmonic that is present, only the fundamental sinusoid gets through, whatever the input's wave shape.

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (B) because the frequency is unchanged. The fundamental frequency does survive, but a square shape needs its higher harmonics (60 kHz, 100 kHz, ...) and the filter removes all of them. Another mistake is choosing (C), from the fact that integrating a square wave gives a triangular wave. An ideal LPF is not an integrator. It removes harmonics completely instead of weighting them by .
