Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) and (D): for all , and has fundamental period .

Official answer: A, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Fundamental period of (time scaling). , so for every exactly when is a period of . The smallest positive period of is , so the smallest positive is given by , that is . Compressing a signal in time () shortens its period; it does not lengthen it. So (D) is TRUE and (B) is FALSE.

  2. Substitute into the series for . Replace by in :

  3. Compare with the given expansion of . The problem writes . This uses the same basis functions , with , which is the fundamental frequency of from Step 1. These basis functions are orthogonal over one period , so the Fourier series of is unique. Therefore for every , and (A) is TRUE.

  4. Check with the analysis formula. . Put , so and the limits become to : The factor from cancels the in , so no appears in the coefficients.

  5. Why (C) is false. If (C) held as well, then , so . Since , every would be and . The zero signal has no fundamental period, so it cannot be the given . (C) is FALSE.

  6. Result. Time scaling by leaves the Fourier series coefficients unchanged, multiplies the fundamental frequency by and divides the fundamental period by . The correct options are (A) and (D).

KEY IDEA

Time scaling compresses the period to and raises the fundamental frequency to , but the Fourier series coefficients stay the same. The same harmonic weights now sit at harmonics of a higher fundamental frequency. In the analysis integral, the from the change of variable cancels the in .

WATCH OUT FOR

Carrying over the Fourier transform scaling rule and picking (C). The appears in the transform because the transform integrates over all time. The series averages over one period, and the shorter period cancels it. A second slip is thinking compression lengthens the period and choosing (B).
