The average power .

Official answer: 7Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Period. The cosines have frequencies (). The fundamental frequency is their GCD, , so and the three cosines are the 1st, 2nd and 3rd harmonics.

  2. What is asked. is the average power of the periodic signal. Since is real, .

  3. Parseval's theorem (trigonometric form). For , the DC term and the harmonics are mutually orthogonal over one period, so every cross term integrates to zero and

  4. DC term: , contributing .

  5. Each harmonic: , contributing ; the three harmonics give .

  6. Total:

  7. Check with exponential coefficients: , so and . Then .

KEY IDEA

The quantity asked for is the average power of a periodic signal. By Parseval's theorem it equals the sum of the powers of the orthogonal Fourier components: for the DC term plus for each cosine of amplitude . Equivalently it is over the exponential coefficients. You never need to square out and integrate.

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slips: (1) squaring the amplitudes without halving, which gives ; (2) halving the DC term as well, which gives ; (3) adding the amplitudes before squaring, which gives , the peak value of at and not its average. The cross terms vanish because the harmonics are orthogonal, and the DC term contributes its full square.
