GATE 2025 EE Q.24: solution and answer

GATE 2025 · EEQ.24 · 1 mark · MCQ

During a power failure, a domestic household uninterruptible power supply (UPS) supplies AC power to a limited number of lights and fans in various rooms. As per a Newton-Raphson load-flow formulation, the UPS would be represented as a

  1. (A)

    Slack bus

  2. (B)

    PV bus

  3. (C)

    PQ bus

  4. (D)

    PQV bus

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The UPS is represented as the slack bus, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Newton-Raphson load flow sorts buses by which two of the four bus quantities , , , are specified. Slack bus: and are specified, and and are found by the solution. PV bus: and are specified. PQ bus: and are specified.

  2. Every load-flow problem needs exactly one slack bus. It is the angle reference (), and it supplies whatever real and reactive power is left over once the loads and the network losses are met. The losses are not known until the solution has been found.

  3. During the power failure the grid is disconnected. The household wiring, with its lights and fans, is an isolated network, and the UPS is its only source.

  4. The lights and fans are loads, so their buses are PQ buses: their and demands are specified.

  5. The UPS has to supply the total load plus the losses in the house wiring. So its output and cannot be fixed in advance; they come out of the solution. That rules out the PQ and PV types for the UPS bus, because both need to be specified.

  6. The UPS inverter holds its output voltage at a set magnitude (for example ) and sets the phase that every other bus voltage is measured against. So and are specified at the UPS bus. Those are exactly the quantities specified at a slack bus.

  7. As the only source in an isolated network, the UPS is the reference bus and the balancing bus. That is the slack bus. 'PQV bus' is not a standard load-flow bus type. The answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

In an isolated network with one source, that source is the slack bus. Its output and must cover the load plus unknown losses, so they cannot be specified, while its inverter fixes and supplies the reference angle .

WATCH OUT FOR

Calling the UPS a PQ bus because it 'delivers whatever the lights and fans demand'. That reasoning shows its and are outputs of the solution, which is the definition of the slack bus, not a PQ bus. A PQ bus needs and specified in advance, and a network made only of PQ buses has no angle reference and no bus to balance the losses.
