Figure description

Single-line diagram. Bus i (voltage V_i) on the left, a vertical bus bar. A horizontal line runs from it through an ideal transformer marked 1: t_i, then along the line labelled Y, then through a second ideal transformer marked t_j: 1, to bus j (voltage V_j) on the right, a vertical bus bar.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The bus admittance matrix is , which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EE (IIT Delhi)

  1. Each ideal transformer scales voltage by its tap ratio and, with power conserved, scales current inversely. In the figure the bus sits on the 1 side of each transformer (ratios and ). The line-side voltages are therefore and .

  2. Current in the line from the end to the end: .

  3. Power balance at the transformer: , so .

  4. Power balance at the transformer: , so .

  5. Collect the currents as :

  6. Check: the matrix is symmetric, as it must be for a bilateral network with no phase shifter. The diagonals are positive, and the row sums are not zero unless . Only option (C) has this form, so the answer is (C).

KEY IDEA

An ideal transformer with ratio multiplies the voltage on the line side by and the bus current by . Each diagonal entry therefore picks up and the off-diagonal entries pick up .

WATCH OUT FOR

Scaling the voltage by the tap ratio but forgetting to scale the current as well, which gives terms instead of . Another slip is attaching the ratio to the wrong side of the transformer, so that the line-side voltage becomes .
