GATE 2018 · EEQ.22 · 1 mark · NAT

A 1000 × 1000 bus admittance matrix for an electric power system has 8000 non-zero elements. The minimum number of branches (transmission lines and transformers) in this system are _____ (up to 2 decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum number of branches is 3500.

Official answer: 3500.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. The bus admittance matrix is with non-zero elements. Split these into diagonal and off-diagonal entries.

  2. Each diagonal entry is the sum of the admittances of everything connected to bus . In a connected system every bus has at least one branch, so all diagonal entries are non-zero.

  3. The off-diagonal non-zero entries number . If any diagonal entry were zero, more of the would be off-diagonal and the branch count would rise, so assuming all diagonals non-zero gives the minimum.

  4. A branch between buses and gives the two off-diagonal entries . The matrix is symmetric when there are no phase-shifting transformers.

  5. So . Equality holds when no two branches join the same pair of buses. Parallel branches between one pair share a single pair of entries, so they would need more branches for the same entries.

KEY IDEA

Each diagonal entry of Y-bus is non-zero, and every branch fills exactly two symmetric off-diagonal entries, so the branch count is (non-zeros minus buses) divided by 2 when no branches are parallel.

WATCH OUT FOR

Dividing all 8000 non-zero elements by 2 and getting 4000, which forgets that the 1000 diagonal entries do not come from separate branches.
