GATE 2024 · EEQ.41 · 2 marks · MCQ

For the three-bus lossless power network shown in the figure, the voltage magnitudes at all the buses are equal to 1 per unit (pu), and the differences of the voltage phase angles are very small. The line reactances are marked in the figure, where , and are strictly positive. The bus injections and are in pu. If , where , and the real power flow from bus 1 to bus 2 is 0 pu, then which one of the following options is correct?

Figure from the GATE 2024 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Triangle network of three buses. Bus 1 (top left) has injection P1 flowing into it; bus 2 (top right) has injection P2 flowing into it. A line between bus 1 and bus 2 carries reactance j alpha x ohm. A line from bus 1 to bus 3 (bottom, drawn with a ground-style arrow) carries reactance j beta x ohm. A line from bus 2 to bus 3 carries reactance j gamma x ohm.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. With equal voltage magnitudes of pu, small angle differences and a lossless network, use the DC power flow: the real power flowing from bus to bus is pu, and the injection at a bus equals the sum of the flows leaving it.

  2. Take bus 3 as the angle reference, . Its injection is then fixed by the other two, , so it places no condition on and .

  3. The flow from bus 1 to bus 2 is zero: . Since is finite and positive, . The line carries no power, so does not appear in the result.

  4. Bus 1 has two lines, to bus 2 (flow ) and to bus 3. Hence .

  5. Bus 2 likewise has the zero-flow line to bus 1 and the line to bus 3. Hence .

  6. Divide: . This needs , which holds because (as , the injections are non-zero).

  7. Using gives , so . This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Under the DC (small-angle, lossless) approximation, zero flow in line 1-2 forces . Each of and then leaves through its own line to bus 3, so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking an option containing (C or D), or inverting the ratio and choosing . The line carries nothing, so drops out. Power through a line is inversely proportional to its reactance, so the larger injection goes with the smaller reactance: gives , not .
