GATE 2023 · EEQ.55 · 2 marks · NAT

The circuit shown in the figure has reached steady state with thyristor 'T' in OFF condition. Assume that the latching and holding currents of the thyristor are zero. The thyristor is turned ON at t = 0 sec. The duration in microseconds for which the thyristor would conduct, before it turns off, is _____ (Round off to 2 decimal places).

Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A 100 V DC source with its + terminal at the top. From the + terminal a wire runs up and right to the left plate of a capacitor C = 1 uF. The right plate of C connects through an inductor L = 4 uH to a lower node. A thyristor T sits in the left vertical branch with its anode toward the top wire (+ terminal) and its cathode toward the lower node, so T is in parallel with the series C-L branch. From the lower node a 4 ohm resistor goes down and back to the negative terminal of the source.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The thyristor conducts for about 7.33 microseconds.

Official answer: 7.1 to 7.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Before firing, T is OFF and no steady direct current flows through the series branch - or the resistor. The capacitor is therefore charged to the source voltage: (upper plate positive) and .

  2. At the thyristor is fired. Taking it as an ideal switch, it connects the top wire to the lower node. The source then drives a constant current through and the resistor:

  3. The capacitor discharges through the loop . Its positive plate feeds current through in the forward direction (anode to cathode). The loop is series resonant:

  4. The characteristic impedance is . With and , the resonant current is

  5. The thyristor current is the sum of the two currents:

  6. With latching and holding currents zero, turns off when first returns to zero. This gives . The first such instant after is , because is positive until and stays above zero until then.

KEY IDEA

Once the thyristor conducts, it carries two currents added together: the constant source current A and the oscillating LC discharge current of peak 50 A. It turns off when the sum first reaches zero, because the oscillating part swings negative enough to cancel the 25 A.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using only the LC discharge current and taking the turn-off at (6.28 microseconds). That ignores the 25 A source current. The other slip is picking against the wrong way round. is the earlier root of and so is the right one.
