Figure description

Figure (a): a DC supply V_DC feeds, from its top rail, an inductor L in parallel with a series branch of a resistor R_f and a diode D. The two branches join at the drain of an n-channel MOSFET whose source is grounded; v_ds is marked + at the drain and - at the source. The R_f-D branch is the freewheeling path for the inductor current (the diode conducts from the drain node up toward the V_DC rail). The gate is driven through R_g from v_g, a rectangular pulse of 15 V between t_0 and t_1. Figure (b): v_ds versus t with a dashed horizontal line at V_DC. v_ds equals V_DC from 0 to t_0, falls to 0 at t_0 (MOSFET ON), stays near 0 until t_1, then at t_1 jumps above V_DC to a peak and decays back to V_DC. Three curves are labelled: with R_f = R_1 has the highest peak and the fastest decay, with R_f = R_3 has a middle peak, with R_f = R_2 has the lowest peak and the slowest decay.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (B): .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Between and the MOSFET is ON, so and the inductor current rises to a value at . With the diode in the branch is reverse biased, so that branch carries no current while the switch is ON.

  2. At the MOSFET turns OFF. The inductor current cannot change instantly, so it is diverted into the loop drain node, , , the rail and back through . The same current flows in at , whatever the value of .

  3. Applying KVL around this loop gives the drain voltage just after turn-off: where is the small diode drop.

  4. The overshoot above is therefore . Since is the same for all curves, a larger gives a higher peak.

  5. The decaying loop current has time constant , so a larger also makes settle to faster. This agrees with the highest curve decaying fastest in Figure (b).

  6. From Figure (b) the peak heights are highest for , then , then lowest for .

  7. Since peak height rises with , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

At turn-off the inductor current is forced through the freewheeling resistor , so the drain voltage jumps to . The overshoot is proportional to , and the peak ordering of the curves is the ordering of the resistances.

WATCH OUT FOR

Reading the lowest curve as the one with the largest resistance, or thinking a larger damps the spike. A larger gives a larger jump, though it also makes the spike decay faster (smaller ).
