Answer and solution

ANSWER

The input power factor is about 0.845, which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Average power comes only from terms of the same frequency in and . The voltage has only the fundamental, so the and current terms give zero average power. .

  2. and . The fundamental current is against , so the current lags by .

  3. The rms current includes every harmonic, because the rms of a sum of sinusoids of different frequencies is the root of the sum of the squared rms values.

  4. Apparent power: .

  5. As a check, the distortion factor is and the displacement factor is . Their product is . This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Power factor = real power / apparent power. Only the fundamental current delivers real power, because the voltage is a pure sinusoid. The rms current counts every harmonic. So PF = distortion factor × displacement factor = 0.976 × 0.866.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using only the displacement factor, , which gives option (B) and ignores the harmonic current. Another slip is dividing by the fundamental rms current in the apparent power, or adding harmonic currents as if they also delivered power.
