GATE 2024 · EEQ.62 · 2 marks · NAT

A single-phase half-controlled bridge converter supplies an inductive load with ripple free load current. The triggering angle of the converter is 60°. The ratio of the rms value of the fundamental component of the input current to the rms value of the total input current of the bridge is __________ (rounded off to 3 decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The ratio of the rms fundamental input current to the total rms input current is about 0.955.

Official answer: 0.940 to 0.970Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. The load current is ripple free, so (constant). In a single-phase half-controlled bridge the freewheeling path makes the source current a quasi-square wave: for a width , then for a width , then for , then for . The wave is symmetric about the centre of each pulse, so it has no cosine term when the origin is moved there. This only shifts the fundamental in phase by and does not change its magnitude.

  2. The firing angle is . Each pulse therefore has width (120°).

  3. Total rms input current: the square of the current equals for a fraction of the cycle.

  4. Fundamental component: for a quasi-square wave of height and pulse width , the peak of the fundamental is . With , .

  5. At : and , so .

  6. Ratio of the rms fundamental to the total rms input current:

KEY IDEA

With ripple-free current, the half-controlled bridge's source current is a quasi-square wave with pulse width . Its fundamental rms is and its total rms is . The ratio is the distortion factor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the full-converter pulse width of (a square wave, giving ), or using in place of for the fundamental. Another slip is taking the pulse width as instead of .
