Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Single-phase bridge fed from an AC source. Two legs: left and right. Each leg has a thyristor on top (anode toward the top rail, cathode-gate arrow drawn, upper devices) and a diode below it. The two upper devices are thyristors and the two lower devices are diodes. The AC source is connected between the midpoints of the two legs. The top rail joins the upper ends of both legs and goes to the load; the load is a resistor in series with an inductor, with I_dc flowing downward through it. The bottom rail returns from the lower ends of both legs to the load. This is a half-controlled (semi-converter) bridge with a highly inductive load.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The amplitude of the fundamental component of the source current is about 17.64 A.

Official answer: 17.3 to 18Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. The circuit has two thyristors in the upper arms and two diodes in the lower arms, with the source across the two leg midpoints: a single-phase half-controlled bridge. The firing angle is . The load current is ripple free at .

  2. In each half-cycle the source current is for a conduction angle . It is zero for the remaining , when the load current freewheels through one thyristor and the diode of the same leg. The duty ratio of each half-cycle is . Over one cycle:

The average value is , because the two half-cycles are equal and opposite.

  3. Fundamental Fourier coefficients, with . The wave has half-wave symmetry, so only odd harmonics appear:

  4. Amplitude of the fundamental:

This is the same as , since .

  5. Numbers for :

    Check with the closed form:

KEY IDEA

In a half-controlled bridge with a ripple-free load current, the source current is a quasi-square wave of height and conduction width per half-cycle. Its fundamental has amplitude .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the full-converter result , which gives 19.10 A. That wave conducts for the full , so it ignores the freewheeling interval of in the semi-converter. Another slip is writing the amplitude as , which is the full-converter formula for a fully controlled bridge, whose waveform is a square wave shifted by .
