Figure from the GATE 2018 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Horizontal axis ω t, vertical axis 'voltage and current'. A sinusoid V_m sin (ω t) is drawn for two cycles. The current is a quasi-square wave of height I_0: zero from 0 to 30°, +I_0 from 30° to 180°, zero from 180° to 210°, -I_0 from 210° to 360°; the second cycle repeats this. Marked instants: 30°, 180°, 210°; I_0 marked with arrows on both levels.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The rms value of the fundamental component of the current is about 17.39 A.

Official answer: 16.90 to 17.70Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Read the waveform: the current is for , zero from to , for , and zero from to . The firing angle is , so conduction lasts in each half-cycle, a duty ratio of of each half-cycle (each pulse is of the full period). The average value over a full cycle is zero.

  2. The wave has half-wave symmetry, , so only odd harmonics exist and the fundamental coefficients are

  3. Peak of the fundamental: Check with the closed form: , so .

  4. RMS value of the fundamental:

KEY IDEA

For a semi-converter input current (quasi-square wave with firing angle ), the fundamental has peak , so its rms value is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the full-conduction square-wave result A and ignoring the factor, or taking instead of .
