The voltage at the input of an AC-DC rectifier is given by where rad/s. The input current drawn by the rectifier is given by . The input power factor, (rounded off to two decimal places), is, ________ lag.
GATE 2022 EE Q.33: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The input power factor is about lagging. This is the distortion factor times the displacement factor .
Official answer: 0.43 to 0.47Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)
The supply voltage is a pure sinusoid at , so only the fundamental of the current can deliver average power. The 3rd and 5th harmonic currents act at different frequencies from the voltage, and their average products with it are zero. Hence , with .
The fundamental current is . So . The current lags the voltage by , so the displacement factor is .
The rms value of the distorted current is the root of the sum of the squares of the harmonic rms values:
The apparent power is . So
Substituting:
KEY IDEA
Average power comes only from harmonics present in both voltage and current. With a pure sinusoidal supply, that is the fundamental alone. Power factor is the distortion factor () times the displacement factor ().
WATCH OUT FOR
Using alone as the power factor and ignoring the harmonic currents. They add to the rms current but not to the power. Another slip is using peak values instead of rms in the distortion factor, or including the 3rd and 5th harmonic phase angles in the power.
