Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Collector-feedback bias circuit with an npn BJT. A 12 V supply rail at the top connects through resistor R2 (1 kΩ), drawn vertically, down to the collector node. From the collector node a horizontal resistor R1 (100 kΩ) runs to the left. Its left end drops down and returns right into the base of the transistor, so R1 connects collector to base. The emitter (arrow pointing outward, npn) goes straight down to the GND line, which is tied to the earth symbol. No emitter resistor and no input source.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The current gain of the BJT is .

Official answer: 148.00 to 152.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Assumptions: dc analysis, , emitter grounded (). So the collector voltage is and the base voltage is .

  2. Ohm's law across (from the 12 V rail to the collector node): carries the collector current plus the current fed back to the base through , so

  3. Ohm's law across the feedback resistor (collector to base). All of the base current flows through it:

  4. KCL at the collector node:

  5. Check the region: , so the collector-base junction is reverse-biased and the base-emitter junction is forward-biased. The BJT is in the active region, so holds.

  6. Current gain:

KEY IDEA

This is collector-feedback bias. Because the emitter is grounded, gives the collector voltage directly. runs from collector to base, so the voltage across it fixes . carries , which is the same as . Subtract from the current in to get , then take the ratio.

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is to treat the whole 6.8 mA in as , which gives . That lands inside the answer range by luck, but it ignores that also supplies the base current through . The other common error is to use as the drop across and forget that the base end of sits at .
