Figure from the GATE 2026 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

One n-channel MOSFET, drawn inside a circle, with its drain at the top and its source at the bottom. The arrow on the source points away from the channel, towards the source lead, which is the n-channel symbol. The +V_DD rail feeds a 1 kΩ resistor down to a node labelled V_G. That node is the drain, and a wire runs from it to the left and down to the gate, so the gate is tied to the drain (a diode-connected MOSFET). The source goes straight to ground. There are no other components.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 2.50 to 2.60Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Circuit reading. The gate is wired to the drain and the source is grounded, so . This is a diode-connected MOSFET fed from through . No current flows into the gate, so all of the resistor current is the drain current .

  2. Region of operation. The device conducts only when . Because , it always holds that , so the triode condition can never be met. Once the device is on, it is in saturation.

  3. Square law in saturation (, channel length modulation neglected):

  4. Ohm's law on the resistor:

  5. Set the two equal. Let , the overdrive voltage. Then , so

  6. Choose the physical root. . The other root, , would make , which means the device is off. That contradicts the square-law equation it came from, so it is rejected. (If the device were off, would give , so the device must be on.)

  7. Gate voltage: .

  8. Check. . The drop across is , so , which agrees. Also , so the device is in saturation as assumed.

KEY IDEA

When the gate is tied to the drain, , so an n-channel MOSFET that is on must be in saturation. Set the square-law current equal to the resistor current . Solve the quadratic and keep the root with .

WATCH OUT FOR

Writing without the factor . That gives , so and , which is outside the key. The key uses the standard form. Other mistakes: keeping the negative root (it makes , so the device would be off), and checking for the triode region, which a diode-connected device can never enter.
