Figure from the GATE 2022 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An enhancement-mode n-channel MOSFET (broken channel line, arrow on the body terminal pointing inward). The drain connects upward through resistor R_L to a top horizontal rail; that rail extends to the right and ends in a ground symbol (so it is small-signal ground). The gate connects by a wire going left and then down to a ground symbol. The body terminal is tied directly to the source by a short bracket wire on the right side of the transistor. The source node is brought out to the right as the terminal marked P. From the source node, resistor R_S goes down to a bottom horizontal rail labelled GND, which ends on the right in a ground symbol.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The impedance looking into node P is , which is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Small-signal model: the top rail and the gate are both at AC ground. The body is tied to the source, so and there is no body effect (the term drops out). Channel-length modulation is ignored, so and the MOSFET is just a dependent current source from drain to source.

  2. Apply a test voltage at P and let be the current it delivers into node P.

  3. The gate is at ground and the source is at , so .

  4. Drain-to-source channel current: . A negative drain-to-source current means a current flows from node P into the source terminal (and up through the channel and to AC ground).

  5. Current from P down through to ground: .

  6. KCL at P:

  7. does not appear: it is in series with an ideal current source (), so it cannot change the current that source draws from P. Hence , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

Looking into the source of a common-gate stage with and no body effect (body tied to source), you see , whatever resistor sits in the drain. That is in parallel with , because both go from P to AC ground.

WATCH OUT FOR

Putting in parallel (option A) or in series with (option C). With infinite, is in series with an ideal current source and has no effect on the source-side impedance. would only matter through : the general result is , which tends to as .
