ANSWER
The fundamental period of z(t) = x(-t) + y(2t+1) is 3 s, option (D). x(-t) has period 3 s, y(2t+1) has period 1.5 s, and their LCM is 3 s.
Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)
Time reversal keeps the period unchanged. Shifting by gives , which equals for every exactly when is a period of . So has the same fundamental period as : .
A time shift keeps the period unchanged; time scaling by divides it by . Shifting by gives , which equals for every exactly when is a period of . The smallest such satisfies , so has fundamental period . The only shifts the signal and does not affect the period.
Periodicity of the sum. The ratio is rational, so is periodic. Since , both terms repeat after 3 s, so is a period of . It is the LCM: .
Rule out 1.5 s and 2 s. Every period of is an integer multiple of its fundamental period , so for some integer . If were even, would also be a period of . But the term repeats every 1.5 s, so and this is not zero for all , because is shorter than 3 s, the fundamental period of , so it is not a period of . Hence is odd, and 1.5 s (B) is ruled out. 2 s (C) is also impossible, because for any integer .
Rule out 1 s: it needs an exact cancellation. The only remaining option shorter than 3 s is (). It would require for every . That means the change in one term exactly cancels the change in the other, and the question gives no such relation between and . For ordinary signals it fails. For example, gives . The two terms have different frequencies, so they cannot cancel, and the term does not repeat after 1 s. (A pair can be built to cancel on purpose. and both have fundamental period 3 s, yet they give , which has period 1 s. This is why the question can only be asking for the period that holds for any and .)
Answer. For and with fundamental period 3 s and no special relation between them, the fundamental period of is the LCM, . Option (D).
KEY IDEA
Time reversal () and time shift () leave the period unchanged. Time scaling divides it by . When the ratio of two periods is rational, the sum is periodic with period equal to the LCM of the two periods. That holds unless parts of the two terms cancel exactly, and the question gives no relation between x and y that could make them cancel.
WATCH OUT FOR
Answering 1.5 s (B). Some students apply the compression by 2 to the whole of z(t), or take the smaller of the two periods instead of their LCM. Only the y term is compressed. Its 1.5 s repetition does not make x(-t) repeat, so the sum repeats only at 3 s. Another slip is thinking the +1 in y(2t+1) or the time reversal in x(-t) changes the period. Neither does.
