Answer and solution

ANSWER

The signal is a trapezoid of height 1: a ramp up over , flat over and a ramp down over . Its energy is , so the answer is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Write each term as a shifted unit ramp :

  2. Build the waveform piece by piece. Each ramp switches on at its breakpoint, so the slope changes by at .

  3. : . For : , rising from to (slope ).

  4. : (slope ). For : , falling from to (slope ).

  5. : (slope ). So is a trapezoid: at , up to at , flat until , back to at .

  6. Energy definition: . Split the integral over the three non-zero pieces:

  7. Substituting in the first integral and in the third, each ramp edge gives , and the flat top gives :

  8. This matches option (D).

KEY IDEA

A sum of shifted ramps is a piecewise-linear signal: at each breakpoint the slope changes by that ramp's coefficient. Sketch the waveform first, then integrate one piece at a time. A linear edge that rises or falls by over a width contributes , and a flat segment of height and width contributes .

WATCH OUT FOR

Students often find the energy of each ramp term separately and add the results. Each ramp on its own has infinite energy, and energy does not add across overlapping terms because has cross terms. Another slip is to take the energy as the area under , which is , not . A third is to mix up the signs at and , which gives a waveform that never returns to zero.
