Answer and solution

ANSWER

The fundamental period of is , which is option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Find the period of each sinusoid with . For , , so . For , , so .

  2. Check that the sum is periodic: . This is rational, so is periodic.

  3. The fundamental period is the smallest that is a whole-number multiple of both, . This needs . The fraction is already in lowest terms (4 and 15 share no common factor), so the smallest choice is , .

  4. Check using frequencies: and . Both are whole-number multiples of (, ), and and share no common factor, so the fundamental frequency is their GCD, . Then . This is option (D).

KEY IDEA

A sum of sinusoids is periodic only if the ratio of their periods is rational. When it is, the fundamental period is the least common multiple of the individual periods. Equivalently, the fundamental frequency is the GCD of the individual frequencies. The amplitudes (4 and 7), and whether each term is a sine or a cosine, have no effect on the period.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the LCM of the coefficients of (15 and 4) and getting 60, which is option (B). Another version of the same slip is to multiply by the wrong factor and get 15 or 30. Those numbers are angular-frequency coefficients, not periods. Convert each term to its period first ( and ), then take the LCM of the periods. That gives .
