Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) The convolution of with its time-reversal is always an even signal.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Let . By the convolution integral, since . For a real this is the autocorrelation of at lag .

  2. Test for even symmetry by replacing with :

  3. Substitute (so , and the limits stay to ): No property of was used, so is even for every whose convolution exists. (A) is always true.

  4. Rule out (B): an odd signal must have , i.e. . But is the energy of , which is positive for any nonzero real . So is not odd in general.

  5. Rule out (C) and (D) with one counterexample: take , a unit pulse on , so is a unit pulse on . Their convolution is the triangle for (zero elsewhere), which is nonzero for both and . So it is neither causal nor anti-causal.

  6. Frequency-domain check: , so , which is unchanged when , i.e. an even spectrum, and an even spectrum belongs to an even time signal. For real , , so , which is also real. Answer: (A).

KEY IDEA

is the autocorrelation of (for real ). Putting and shifting the dummy variable returns the same integral, so the result is always even. In the frequency domain, does not change when .

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (C) or (D) because one of the two signals is time-reversed. Time-reversal flips where each signal is nonzero, but the convolution spreads over both sides of : a pulse on convolved with its mirror image on gives a triangle on . Some students also choose (B), treating reversal as a sign flip, but is the signal's energy, which is positive, so the result cannot be odd.
