Figure from the GATE 2018 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single block labelled 'Hilbert Transform'. An arrow labelled 4 sinc(2t) enters it from the left, and an arrow labelled y(t) leaves it on the right. There are no other blocks or feedback paths.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 8Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Input spectrum. With the normalised sinc, , and time scaling gives for . With :

  2. Hilbert transformer. Its frequency response is , so for every . So , and everywhere except at the single point . A single point adds nothing to an integral.

  3. Parseval's theorem:

  4. Check in the time domain. Since , the input energy is . The Hilbert transform does not change the energy, so .

KEY IDEA

A Hilbert transformer is an all-pass filter, with . It only shifts phase by , so the output energy equals the input energy. Find the input energy with Parseval: has a flat spectrum of height over , so the energy is .

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Reading as instead of the stated normalised form . That gives . (2) Taking the scaled spectrum as without the factor, which gives 32. (3) Treating the Hilbert transformer like the analytic-signal operation, which removes negative frequencies, and halving the energy to 4. The Hilbert transformer keeps every frequency and changes only its phase.
