An optical pulse containing photons is incident on a photodiode and electron-hole pairs are created. The maximum possible quantum efficiency (in %) of the photodiode is ______ .
GATE 2018 IN Q.25: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The maximum possible quantum efficiency of the photodiode is .
Official answer: 75Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)
Quantum efficiency is the ratio of the number of electron-hole pairs generated to the number of photons incident: .
Each absorbed photon creates at most one electron-hole pair, so the pairs created are the most that can be credited to the incident photons. The word 'maximum' means every created pair is counted, with none lost to recombination.
In percent, .
KEY IDEA
Quantum efficiency is electron-hole pairs created divided by photons incident. 'Maximum possible' means all created pairs count, so the ratio is taken directly.
WATCH OUT FOR
Using the ratio the wrong way round (photons divided by pairs) gives 133%, which is impossible. Another slip is leaving the answer as 0.75 instead of converting to percent.
