GATE 2022 IN Q.51: solution and answer

GATE 2022 · INQ.51 · 2 marks · NAT

Monochromatic light of wavelength 532 nm is used to measure the absorption coefficient of a material in a UV-Visible Spectrophotometer. The measured light intensity after transmission through a 1 cm thick sample of the material is 0.414 mW/cm^2. For a sample of thickness 2 cm, the measured light intensity is 0.186 mW/cm^2. The absorption coefficient (in cm^-1) of the material is ________ (round off to two decimal places)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The absorption coefficient is .

Official answer: 0.75 to 0.85Source: Official answer key, GATE 2022 IN (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Light passing through a uniformly absorbing sample follows the Beer–Lambert law: , where is the absorption coefficient and is the unknown incident intensity.

  2. For the 1 cm sample: .

  3. For the 2 cm sample: .

  4. Divide the first equation by the second so that cancels:

  5. Take the natural logarithm:

  6. Evaluate the ratio: , so .

  7. Therefore . The wavelength of 532 nm is not needed in the calculation.

KEY IDEA

Intensity falls exponentially with thickness. Dividing the readings at two thicknesses cancels the unknown incident intensity, so .

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming the incident intensity is 0.414 mW/cm² (treating the 1 cm reading as the input), or using instead of . Either gives a wrong value, and the wavelength is a distractor.
