Answer and solution

ANSWER

The threshold current of the laser diode is , option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Above threshold, the piece-wise linear light-current characteristic is , and the output is zero below .

  2. Given: , , .

  3. is non-zero, so the diode is operating above threshold and the linear relation applies.

  4. The current above threshold is

  5. The threshold current is

  6. This is option (C).

KEY IDEA

Above threshold a laser diode's output is . Slope efficiency is the slope of the P-I line, so the line meets the current axis at . Divide the power by the slope to get the current above threshold, then subtract that from the drive current.

WATCH OUT FOR

Mixing units: 30 mW divided by 0.5 W/A is 60 mA, not 60 A. Another error is taking 60 mA as the threshold itself (option D) when it is the current above threshold. A third is assuming the line passes through the origin (option A), which would give a threshold of 0.
