Figure description

Single-line diagram: generator G1 (circle) connected to a bus on the left with voltage V1∠θ1, a horizontal transmission line labelled Z = Z_L∠θ_L joining to a bus on the right with voltage V2∠θ2, connected to generator G2 (circle).

  1. (A)

Real power loss in Case-1 is more than that in Case-2

  2. (B)

Real power loss in Case-2 is more than that in Case-1

  3. (C)

Reactive power loss in Case-1 is more than that in Case-2

  4. (D)

Reactive power loss in Case-2 is more than that in Case-1

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Options (A) and (D) are correct.

Official answer: A, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Losses in a series impedance carrying current are . So and , with (all values in p.u.).

  2. Case-1: , so and . Also and (since ), so .

  3. Case-1 current: p.u., so .

  4. Case-1 losses: p.u. and .

  5. Case-2: , so and . Taking , : and .

  6. Case-2 voltage drop: , so p.u.

  7. Case-2 current: p.u., so .

  8. Case-2 losses: and p.u.

  9. Compare: real loss is in Case-1 and in Case-2, so (A) is true and (B) is false. Reactive loss is in Case-1 and in Case-2, so (C) is false and (D) is true. Correct options: A and D.

KEY IDEA

Real loss is and reactive loss is , so the angle of decides which kind of loss the line has. Find from the voltage difference first, then split into and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using instead of the phasor difference in Case-2. The angle between the voltages makes the difference p.u., not p.u. Another slip is treating a purely reactive line as lossless: it has no real loss but it absorbs reactive power.
