Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Four equal circles of radius r, each touching its neighbours, arranged as a 2 x 2 square: two circles on top, two below. The top-left circle shows its centre as a dot with an arrow marking the radius r. Centre-to-centre spacing is 2r along the sides and 2 sqrt(2) r along the diagonals.

  1. (A)

    4 r

  2. (B)

    1.414 r

  3. (C)

    2 r

  4. (D)

    1.723 r

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The geometric mean radius is about , option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Each solid round strand of radius has self-GMD . The four strands touch, so their centres lie at the corners of a square of side .

  2. From one strand, the distances to the other three are , and the diagonal .

  3. The GMR of the group of strands is the -th root of the product of all distances, with :

  4. By symmetry every strand gives the same product, so

  5. Substitute and :

  6. and , so . Option (D).

KEY IDEA

For a bundle or stranded conductor, the GMR is the -th root of the product of all distances between strands, taking each strand's distance to itself as its self-GMD .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the strand radius itself instead of for the self term. Another slip is taking a 4th root of the product of the three mutual distances only, or forgetting the diagonal .
