Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A two-port network box labelled [Z] sits in the middle. Input side (port 1, left): a 120 V independent voltage source, with + at the top and - at the bottom, is connected in series with a 10 Ω resistor in the top wire, and the resistor goes to the top input terminal of the two-port. The bottom of the source connects straight to the bottom input terminal. Port-1 voltage V_1 is marked + at the top terminal and - at the bottom. Current I_1 flows to the right, into the top input terminal. Output side (port 2, right): current I_2 flows to the left, into the top output terminal. Port-2 voltage V_2 is marked + at the top and - at the bottom. A load impedance Z_L (a box) is connected across the output terminals.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

. This is the Thevenin impedance seen at port 2, .

Official answer: 48Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Z-parameter equations with both port currents flowing into the network, as drawn: and .

  2. At the input port, KVL around the source loop gives .

  3. By the maximum power transfer theorem, must equal the complex conjugate of the Thevenin impedance seen at port 2. To find , set the independent source to zero, which leaves only the resistor across port 1, and drive port 2 with a test current .

  4. With the source zeroed, . Substituting into the first equation: .

  5. Substituting into the second equation: , so .

  6. Check with the standard result for a two-port whose port 1 is terminated by a source resistance :

  7. is purely resistive, so . (For completeness: with port 2 open, and , so and .)

KEY IDEA

For maximum power, the load must be the conjugate of the Thevenin impedance seen at the output port. For a two-port described by Z-parameters, with a source resistance on port 1, that impedance is . You get it by zeroing the source, writing , and eliminating .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual errors are leaving out the 10 Ω source resistance, which gives , or taking on its own as the output impedance. Both ignore how the port-1 termination couples back through . A sign slip in is another trap: with defined as flowing into the network, the zeroed source loop forces , not .
