Figure from the GATE 2025 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A ladder two-port network with a common bottom (ground) rail. Port 1 is on the left: V_1, + at the top terminal and − at the bottom terminal, and current I_1 flows into the top terminal (arrow pointing right). From the top-left terminal, a series 2 Ω resistor runs to node A. A shunt 2 Ω resistor connects node A to the bottom rail. A second series 2 Ω resistor runs from node A to node B. A shunt 2 Ω resistor connects node B to the bottom rail. A third series 2 Ω resistor runs from node B to the top-right terminal. Port 2 is on the right: V_2, + at the top terminal and − at the bottom terminal, and current I_2 flows into the top-right terminal (arrow pointing left, into the network). So there are five resistors, all 2 Ω: three in series along the top and two shunts to the bottom rail.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (A): .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Definition of the Z-parameters. With port 2 open (): and . With port 1 open (): and . Call the node after the first series resistor A and the node after the second series resistor B.

  2. (port 2 open). With no current flows in the right-hand series , so the branch leaving node A to the right is just the middle series plus the shunt at B, i.e. . Seen from port 1:

  3. (port 2 open), current divider at node A. splits between the shunt at A and the path. The current in the path (through the shunt at B) is

  4. Because , there is no drop across the right-hand series resistor, so equals the voltage across the shunt at B: (Check by nodal analysis: at B, gives ; at A, , so and .)

  5. Reciprocity and symmetry. The network contains only resistors, so it is reciprocal: . It is also a mirror image of itself about its centre (series 2, shunt 2, series 2, shunt 2, series 2), so it is symmetric: .

  6. Result. This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Open-circuit one port at a time. With a port open, its series resistor carries no current, so it drops out of the input impedance and adds no drop to the output voltage. That makes a series-parallel reduction and a single current division. Reciprocity (the network has only resistors) and mirror symmetry then give and with no extra work.

WATCH OUT FOR

Each wrong option matches a specific slip. Adding all five resistors in series, as if the shunts were series elements, gives 10 and 2 (option C). Writing the divided current as and forgetting to multiply by the shunt at B gives 1/3 (option D). Swapping the driving-point and transfer entries gives option B: must be the larger one, since includes the drop across the first series resistor. Another trap is counting the open-circuited right-hand series resistor in . With it has no drop across it.
