Consider the two-port network as shown in the Figure.

Which of the following options provides the correct set of values of A, B, C and D parameters?

GATE 2026 EC question 51: A symmetrical T-network between port P1 (left pair of terminals) and port P2 (right pair of terminals).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2026 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A symmetrical T-network between port P1 (left pair of terminals) and port P2 (right pair of terminals). The top line runs from the upper P1 terminal through a series 1 kΩ resistor to a central node, then through a second series 1 kΩ resistor to the upper P2 terminal. A 1 kΩ shunt resistor connects the central node down to the bottom line. The bottom line is a plain wire joining the lower P1 terminal to the lower P2 terminal (common return). No sources are present.

  1. (A)

    A = 1/2, B = 3×10^3 Ω, C = 10^-3 Ω^-1, D = 1/2

  2. (B)

    A = 2, B = 3 Ω, C = 1 Ω^-1, D = 2

  3. (C)

    A = 2, B = 6×10^3 Ω, C = 2×10^-3 Ω^-1, D = 2

  4. (D)

    A = 2, B = 3×10^3 Ω, C = 10^-3 Ω^-1, D = 2

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Option (D): , , , .

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Definition of the transmission (ABCD) parameters, with taken as entering port 2: and . Call the left series arm , the right series arm and the shunt arm . Here .

  2. Port 2 open (): flows through and then , and no current flows in . So and .

  3. Hence and .

  4. Port 2 short-circuited (): now sits in parallel with , so the input sees . So .

  5. Current divider at the central node: the current through the short is .

  6. Hence and . The standard T-network result agrees: .

  7. Checks: the network is made only of resistors, so it is reciprocal and must be 1. Here . It is also symmetrical, so must hold, and it does. The set , , , is option (D).

KEY IDEA

Find the ABCD parameters from two port-2 tests. With port 2 open () you get and . With port 2 shorted () you get and . For a T-network with series arms , and shunt arm this gives , , and . Then check with (reciprocal) and (symmetrical).

WATCH OUT FOR

Doing the whole calculation in kΩ and never converting back. That gives and , and writing these as and lands on option (B). A second slip is to find in place of , which gives as in option (A). Option (A) also fails the reciprocity check, since .
