Figure from the GATE 2018 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A two-terminal box labelled "Electrical Circuit". The top terminal wire carries a current i(t) with the arrow pointing into the box (left to right toward the box). The voltage v(t) is marked across the two terminals with + at the top terminal and - at the bottom terminal, so v and i follow the passive sign convention (power delivered to the circuit is v · i).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

: the circuit absorbs at DC and delivers back at , so the net average power is zero.

Official answer: 10.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Passive sign convention. In the figure enters the terminal of , so the average power delivered to the circuit is the time average of : .

  2. Power adds across different frequencies. Multiplying out gives a DC×DC term, two DC×AC cross terms and one AC×AC term. Each cross term is a constant times a sinusoid at , whose average over a period is zero. So .

  3. DC part: .

  4. Write the AC voltage as a cosine with a positive amplitude: . So and .

  5. AC part, using peak amplitudes (, ): (Same result with rms values: .)

  6. Set the average power to zero: .

  7. Check: with , the circuit absorbs at DC and at (), meaning it sends back. The net average power is .

KEY IDEA

When voltage and current contain components at different frequencies (here DC and ), the average power is the sum of the powers at each frequency, because products of components at different frequencies average to zero. At DC, . At , , and only after both signals are written as cosines with positive amplitudes.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the voltage angle as and ignoring the minus sign in . That gives and , a sign error. The minus sign is a phase shift, so the angle difference is , not . A second mistake is to leave out the DC power , or to add cross terms such as , which average to zero.
