Figure from the GATE 2018 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

An infinite ladder network between two input terminals (top-left and bottom-left dots). An arrow labelled Z_eq looks into the terminals. The top rail has repeated series elements, each an inductor marked j9 Ω. After each series element, a shunt branch runs from the top rail down to the bottom (return) rail. Each shunt branch is an inductor marked j5 Ω in series with a capacitor marked -j1 Ω. The pattern (series j9 Ω, then shunt j5 Ω + -j1 Ω) is drawn twice and continues indefinitely to the right, shown by dashed rails and dots. The bottom rail is a plain conductor.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The equivalent impedance of the infinite ladder is , option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Reduce one shunt branch. The inductor and the capacitor are in series, so . The series element in each section is .

  2. Use the self-similarity of an infinite ladder. Removing the first section leaves the same infinite ladder, so the impedance seen to the right of the first series arm is again. It sits in parallel with the first shunt branch. Hence

  3. Form the quadratic. Multiply both sides by : Using :

  4. Solve it. This gives or .

  5. Pick the physical root. At this frequency every element of a section is inductive: in series and a net in shunt. Two positive reactances combine to a positive reactance whether they are in series () or in parallel (). So a ladder cut off after any number of sections is inductive, and so is its limit. That rules out .

  6. Check by iteration. Put , so . Start from the one-section value and repeat: . This confirms . The iteration settles on and not on because has slope . That slope is at , so each step shrinks the error and the iteration converges there. At the slope is , so the error grows and is never reached. Answer: (A) .

KEY IDEA

An infinite ladder looks the same after you remove its first section. So , which is a quadratic in . Of its two roots, keep the one a physical ladder can actually have. Here every element is inductive, so must be a positive reactance.

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to stop after one section and answer (option C); that is only the first step of the iteration. Another is to take the wrong quadratic root (), or to slip a sign in and land on (option B). A third is to forget that the shunt branch is a series L–C pair and must be combined first, giving .
