Figure description

A table with four columns headed Nation, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and five data rows in this order: USA: Gold 40, Silver 44, Bronze 41. Canada: Gold 39, Silver 27, Bronze 24. Japan: Gold 20, Silver 12, Bronze 13. Australia: Gold 17, Silver 19, Bronze 16. France: Gold 16, Silver 26, Bronze 22.

  1. (A)

France will occupy the third place if the list were made on the basis of the total number of medals won.

  2. (B)

The order of the top two nations will not change even if the list is made on the basis of the total number of medals won.

  3. (C)

USA and Canada together have less than 50% of the medals awarded to the nations in the above table.

  4. (D)

Canada has won twice as many total medals as Japan.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(C) is the incorrect statement. USA and Canada together won 215 of the 376 medals in the table, about 57.2%, which is more than 50%.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Total medals per nation (Gold + Silver + Bronze): USA , Canada , Japan , Australia , France .

  2. Rank by total: USA (125) > Canada (90) > France (64) > Australia (52) > Japan (45).

  3. (A) France is third by total, so the statement is correct.

  4. (B) By gold the top two are USA (40) and Canada (39). By total they are still USA (125) and Canada (90), in the same order. Correct.

  5. (C) Grand total , so half of it is . USA + Canada . In percentage terms, , which is more than 50%. The claim of "less than 50%" is therefore false. INCORRECT.

  6. (D) Canada , which is twice Japan's total. Correct.

  7. The only incorrect statement is (C).

KEY IDEA

Add each row across to get every nation's total medal count, then test each statement against those totals. For a "less than 50%" claim, compare the part with half the grand total (here 188). That settles it without working out an exact percentage.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using only the Gold column, or reading the question as "which statement is correct". On gold alone, USA + Canada have 79 of 132 golds, which is also more than 50%, but options (A) and (D) need the totals across all three columns. Candidates also make arithmetic slips in the grand total (376); a slip there can make (C) look true.
