GATE 2022 · ECQ.11 · 1 mark · MCQ

Consider the two-dimensional vector field , where and denote the unit vectors along the -axis and the -axis, respectively. A contour in the - plane, as shown in the figure, is composed of two horizontal lines connected at the two ends by two semicircular arcs of unit radius. The contour is traversed in the counter-clockwise sense. The value of the closed path integral

Figure from the GATE 2022 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

x-y axes with the origin marked (0,0). A closed contour C encloses a shaded region. Bottom edge: a straight segment along the x-axis from (0,0) to (4,0), with an arrow pointing right (+x). Right end: a semicircular arc of radius r = 1 centred at (4,1), bulging inward (to the left, towards the region), joining (4,0) to (4,2), with an arrow pointing upward. Top edge: a straight horizontal segment from (4,2) to (0,2), with an arrow pointing left (-x). Left end: a semicircular arc of radius r = 1 centred at (0,1), bulging inward (to the right), joining (0,2) to (0,0), with an arrow pointing downward. Each arc has a dashed radius line labelled r = 1. Labelled points: (0,2), (0,0), (4,0). The shaded region lies between the two horizontal lines and the two inward-bulging arcs; the overall sense of traversal is counter-clockwise.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The closed path integral is , which is option (A). The field is the gradient of , so its integral around any closed curve is zero.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Write the field as with , . With , the integrand is .

  2. Test whether the field is conservative (2-D curl): everywhere, and , are smooth on the whole plane, which is simply connected. So is a gradient field.

  3. Find the potential: with . Check: .

  4. Fundamental theorem for line integrals: for a gradient field, . A closed path ends where it starts, so .

  5. Cross-check with Green's theorem ( is a simple, piecewise-smooth closed curve traversed counter-clockwise): So the shape of the contour, the arc radii and the direction of traversal make no difference.

  6. Direct check, piece by piece, using at the four junctions: , , , . Bottom line: . Right arc: . Top line: . Left arc: . Total: .

  7. Hence , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

is a conservative (gradient) field: its 2-D curl is zero everywhere. The line integral of a gradient field depends only on where the path starts and ends, so around any closed contour it is . The figure's geometry is a distraction.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (C), . That is the length of (two lines of length plus two semicircles of length ), which is , not the work integral . The other trap is working through the four pieces and getting a direction wrong on the top line or an arc, so the pieces fail to cancel. Check the curl first: once it is zero on the whole plane, the closed-path integral is with no parametrisation needed.
