Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

The positive x and y axes meeting at the origin (first quadrant only). In the first quadrant, away from both axes, sits a closed oval curve labelled C with an arrowhead at its top pointing left, so the curve is traversed counter-clockwise. The inside of the oval is labelled R.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(C) does not give the area. Traversed counter-clockwise it equals of .

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Green's theorem, for a simple closed curve traversed counter-clockwise (positively oriented) around the region : Any choice of with turns the line integral into the area of .

  2. (A) is the area of by definition. It represents the area.

  3. (B) Take . Then , so It represents the area.

  4. (C) Take . Then , so The area of a region is positive, so this is its negative. It does not represent the area.

  5. (D) Take . Then , so It represents the area.

  6. Only (C) fails: traversed counter-clockwise, gives . The correct expression would be . Answer: (C).

KEY IDEA

By Green's theorem, taken counter-clockwise equals the area of exactly when . That holds for and for . For it is , which gives the negative of the area.

WATCH OUT FOR

Forgetting the minus sign in Green's theorem, , and so treating as the area. Counter-clockwise, the area is . A second mistake is to pick (D) because of its factor . The two terms each contribute half the area, so together they give the whole area.
