Which of the following differential equations is/are nonlinear?

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) and (D) are nonlinear. In (B), is multiplied by . In (D), appears inside an exponential. (A) and (C) are linear first-order equations whose coefficients depend on .

Official answer: B, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Test for linearity: an ODE in is linear when it can be written as . That means and its derivatives appear only to the first power, are never multiplied by each other, and never sit inside a nonlinear function. The coefficients may be any functions of , the independent variable. The initial condition has no bearing on linearity.

  2. (A) has the standard form with and . Both depend only on , so the equation is linear.

  3. (B) The term multiplies the dependent variable by its own derivative, so it is a degree-2 term in . The equation is nonlinear. The term is only a forcing term in .

  4. (C) Rewrite it as . The coefficients and are functions of alone, and and each appear to the first power. The equation is linear, with variable coefficients.

  5. (D) The derivative sits inside an exponential, , so the equation cannot be put in the form . Superposition fails because . Solving for the derivative gives the same conclusion: , which is nonlinear in . The equation is nonlinear.

  6. So the nonlinear equations are (B) and (D).

KEY IDEA

Linearity is judged only by how the dependent variable and its derivatives appear. They must enter to the first power, never multiplied together and never inside a function such as or . Coefficients that depend on the independent variable (like , , ) keep an equation linear.

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is marking (A) or (C) as nonlinear because of the products , or . Those factors depend only on , so the equations stay linear. The other is confusing degree with linearity and passing over (B): its derivative appears to the first power, but the product makes it nonlinear.
