Consider the following partial differential equation (PDE)

where and are distinct positive real numbers. Select the combination(s) of values of the real parameters and such that is a solution of the given PDE.

[As printed, the second term of the exponent is blank in the paper. Since the options give values for , the intended function is .]

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct options are (A) and (B). Substituting gives the condition , and only options (A) and (B) satisfy it.

Official answer: A, BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Try the exponential solution . The blank in the printed exponent has to be , because the options give values of . Each derivative brings down a constant factor: , and .

  2. Substitute these into the PDE: . Since for every and , we can divide by . This gives the condition

  3. (A): . The condition holds, so (A) is correct.

  4. (B): . The condition holds, so (B) is correct.

  5. (C): , so it fails. Here , which makes the left side while the right side is .

  6. (D): , so it fails.

  7. The correct options are therefore (A) and (B). In general, any pair on the ellipse gives a solution. It is an ellipse because .

KEY IDEA

With an exponential trial solution , each second partial derivative becomes a multiplication: by for and by for . The PDE then reduces to one algebraic condition, , and each option is checked against it.

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to pick (D) by requiring each term to match on its own ( and ). Only the sum has to equal , and (D) makes it . Another is to pick (C) because a zero exponent looks like the "trivial" solution. But , not the zero function, and the constant does not satisfy .
