Which of the given options is/are solution(s) to the given wave equation?
- (A)
- (B)
- (C)
- (D)
Consider the following wave equation,
Which of the given options is/are solution(s) to the given wave equation?
ANSWER
Options (A) and (C) are solutions of . Every term in them depends only on or , which is a wave travelling at .
Official answer: A, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)
Compare with the standard 1-D wave equation . Here , so the wave speed is .
Define the residual . is a solution exactly when , and is linear: . Now take a travelling-wave term , where may be negative. Then and , so If is not identically zero, the term is a solution only when , i.e. when it is a function of or of . This is d'Alembert's form .
(A): Both terms use , one with and one with . Each has , so by linearity the sum has . Solution.
(B): The first term, , has , so its residual is . The second term has , so its residual is The total residual is , which is never zero. Not a solution.
(C): has and has . Each residual is , so the sum has . Solution.
(D): Write each term as with . The first term has and the second has . For such a term, and , so Both terms have the same factor, so the residual of the whole option is This is not identically zero; at , it equals . The two terms therefore do not cancel each other. Not a solution. The reason: , so these waves travel at , not .
The correct options are (A) and (C).
KEY IDEA
Every solution of has the form , with here. To test a term, write its argument as a multiple of and check that . If a term fails, work out the residual of the whole sum: the bad terms' residuals could in principle cancel, so check that they do not.
WATCH OUT FOR
In (D), taking the 100 that multiplies as the wave speed. The argument is , so the speed is . The mistake runs the other way in (B): reading as close enough to when its speed is . A third error is to reject a sum only because each of its terms fails. Terms that fail can still cancel, so always compute the residual of the whole expression.
