GATE 2024 · ECQ.39 · 2 marks · MCQ

A uniform plane wave with electric field V/m is travelling in the air (relative permittivity, and relative permeability, ) in the direction ( is a positive constant, is the unit vector along the axis). It is incident normally on an ideal electric conductor (conductivity, ) at . The position of the first null of the total magnetic field in the air (measured from , in metres) is ______.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The first null of the total magnetic field is at , a quarter wavelength in front of the conductor. Option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Read the phase constant off : , so . The air fills and the conductor face is at .

  2. At a perfect conductor the reflection coefficient for is , because when . The reflected field is therefore .

  3. Total electric field in the air: . It is zero at , as the boundary condition (tangential vanishes on a perfect conductor) requires.

  4. Magnetic fields from , where is the direction of travel and (with and ). Incident wave (): . Reflected wave (): .

  5. Total magnetic field: So is at its maximum at the wall, where the surface current flows, while is zero there.

  6. Nulls of are where , that is in the air. The first one (nearest the wall) is at : This is from the conductor, so the answer is option (A).

KEY IDEA

When a wave hits a perfect conductor at normal incidence it forms a standing wave. goes as and has a null at the wall. goes as and has a maximum at the wall. So the nulls sit at odd multiples of from the wall, and here .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slip is to use the electric-field pattern for the magnetic field. is zero at the wall and its next null is at (option B). is at its maximum at the wall, so its first null is at . Choosing (D) means the null spacing was taken as instead of . Choosing (C) usually means was read off the exponent instead of , which doubles . Some candidates also forget that the air is the region and give a positive answer.
