A transparent dielectric coating is applied to glass () to eliminate the reflection of red light (). The minimum thickness of the dielectric coating, in , that can be used is ________ (rounded off to two decimal places).

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The minimum coating thickness is , which rounds to .

Official answer: 0.12 to 0.14Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Refractive indices. For a lossless medium, . Air: . Glass: .

  2. Condition for zero reflection (quarter-wave matching). At normal incidence from air onto glass through a single coating layer, reflection is zero only when the coating acts as a quarter-wave transformer between the two media. In impedance form this is . For non-magnetic media (with ), so

  3. Thickness condition. The coating thickness must be an odd multiple of a quarter of the wavelength inside the coating:

  4. Minimum thickness (take ):

  5. Check. The wave reflected at the coating–glass face travels an extra distance , which adds a phase of . Both interfaces go from lower to higher index, so both reflections pick up the same sign. The two reflected waves therefore arrive out of phase. Because , the two interface reflection coefficients are equal: at air–coating and at coating–glass. The exact transmission-line result agrees: with , the impedance seen from the air side is , so the net reflection is zero.

  6. Rounded to two decimal places, .

KEY IDEA

An anti-reflection coating is a quarter-wave transformer. Its index must be the geometric mean of the two media it sits between, , and its thickness must be a quarter of the wavelength inside the coating, , not a quarter of the free-space wavelength.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the free-space wavelength gives , which rounds to 0.19. Using the glass index instead of the coating index gives . Both answers fall outside the key. Another slip is taking (4) rather than (2).
