Write the phase of a uniform plane wave as , where is the propagation (wave) vector and .
Compare this with the given phase: , so (in ). The wave travels along .
In vacuum there are no sources, and Gauss's law for magnetism gives . For a plane wave with a constant amplitude vector , this becomes for every and . So , which means the field is transverse to the direction of propagation.
Apply the transversality condition with :
Solve: .
KEY IDEA
A uniform plane wave in a source-free medium is transverse. Because , the amplitude vector of must be perpendicular to the wave vector . You read off the phase by writing it as .
WATCH OUT FOR
Students often take the wave vector as straight from the phase. Writing in the form gives . For this question the sign does not change , because flipping still gives . It does reverse the direction of propagation, which matters in related questions. Another error is to pick the coefficients that make the dot product , or to set parallel to , instead of perpendicular to it.
