GATE 2023 EC question 41: Unity negative feedback loop.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Unity negative feedback loop. Input R(s) = α /s^2 enters a summing junction with a + sign on the input and a − sign on the feedback path. The junction output is labelled E(s) and feeds a forward block (k)/(s(s+2)), whose output is Y(s). Y(s) is taken straight back, with no block in the path (unity gain), to the − input of the summing junction.

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The steady-state error is , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. The loop has unity feedback and . has one pole at the origin, so the system is type 1. A type-1 system follows a ramp with a finite, nonzero steady-state error.

  2. Check stability first, because the final value theorem only applies to a stable loop. The characteristic equation is . For a second-order polynomial, all coefficients positive is enough for stability, and that holds for every .

  3. Velocity error constant:

  4. Apply the final value theorem to :

  5. Cross-check with the shortcut for a ramp of slope : . The answer is option (A).

KEY IDEA

In a stable type-1 unity-feedback loop, a ramp leaves a steady-state error , where . Here the factor makes , not .

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking by ignoring the factor, which gives (option B). Another is using instead of , which gives (option C). And the final value theorem should not be used before checking that the closed loop is stable.
