GATE 2022 EE question 39: Block diagram: R(s) enters summing junction 1 (R with +, feedback with −).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2022 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Block diagram: R(s) enters summing junction 1 (R with +, feedback with −). Output of junction 1 enters summing junction 2 (+ from junction 1, − from inner feedback). Output of junction 2 feeds block 10/s. Output of 10/s (a take-off point) feeds block 10/s, whose output is Y(s). Inner loop: unity negative feedback from the output of the first 10/s block back to the − input of junction 2. Outer loop: unity negative feedback from Y(s) back to the − input of junction 1.

  4. (D)

    and rad/s

Answer and solution

ANSWER

and , which is option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Reduce the inner loop first. It is the first block with unity negative feedback, so by :

  2. This reduced block is in cascade with the second block, which gives the forward path of the outer loop:

  3. Close the outer unity negative feedback loop:

  4. Compare with the standard second-order form . The constant term gives , so .

  5. The term gives , so .

  6. So and , which is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Reduce nested loops from the inside out. The inner unity-feedback loop around an integrator becomes a first-order lag . Closing the outer loop then gives a standard second-order denominator, and you read from the constant term and from the coefficient.

WATCH OUT FOR

Ignoring the inner loop and treating the forward path as . That gives , so , which is not an option. Another slip is taking as 100 (the value of ) or setting instead of , which gives .
