GATE 2020 EC question 55: Unity negative feedback loop.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Unity negative feedback loop. Input R(s) enters a summing junction with a + sign on the reference input and a - sign on the feedback input. The summer output (error) feeds block C(s), which feeds block G(s) in cascade; the output of G(s) is Y(s). Y(s) is fed back directly (gain 1, no block) to the minus input of the summing junction.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 30Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Forward path. The feedback is unity (the output returns to the summer directly, with no block), so the open-loop transfer function is The controller zero at cancels the plant pole at .

  2. Stability comes first, because the final-value theorem only holds for a stable closed loop. Without the cancellation, the characteristic equation is The cancelled mode at is in the left half-plane, and has both roots in the left half-plane for every . So the loop is stable for , and satisfies this.

  3. System type. has one pole at the origin, so the loop is type 1. A unit ramp therefore leaves a finite steady-state error .

  4. Velocity error constant:

  5. Cross-check straight from the error signal: This agrees with .

  6. Apply the given condition:

KEY IDEA

With unity feedback, the ramp error of a type-1 loop is , where . The controller zero cancels the plant pole at , which leaves . That gives , so . The cancelled mode sits at , in the left half-plane, so it cannot make the loop unstable.

WATCH OUT FOR

A common slip is to ignore the controller's pole at and take , which gives . Another is to use the factor after cancelling it, for example writing with the wrong factor or keeping in the denominator, which gives a different value. Some students also apply the final-value theorem without checking stability first. Here the loop is stable for every , but you should state that check before using the theorem.
