GATE 2023 IN question 62: Op-amp with inverting (−) input on top and non-inverting (+) input below;Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Op-amp with inverting (−) input on top and non-inverting (+) input below; output node labelled V_o on the right. Inverting-input node: a 3R resistor from ground to this node, and a 3R feedback resistor from this node to V_o. Non-inverting-input node (call it P): a 3R resistor from the positive terminal of a 1 V DC source (negative terminal grounded) to P; a resistor R from P to a second node X; node X has a resistor R to ground and a resistor R to the output V_o.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 1.9 to 2.1Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Assume an ideal op-amp: infinite open-loop gain and zero input currents. Step 7 shows that the negative feedback outweighs the positive feedback, so the two inputs sit at the same voltage (virtual short): .

  2. Inverting side. No current enters the input, so the two resistors form a voltage divider from to ground: . The virtual short then gives , where P is the non-inverting-input node.

  3. KCL at node P (no current into the input). The current in from the 1 V source through equals the current out through to node X:

  4. KCL at node X. The currents in from P and from the output equal the current out to ground:

  5. Substitute into the node-X equation: . So , and no current flows in the between P and X.

  6. Substitute into the node-P equation:

  7. Check. , so no current flows in the from the 1 V source or in the between P and X. At X, flows in from the output and flows out to ground, so KCL balances. Feedback sign: with the source set to zero, node X sees to ground in parallel with to ground, which is . So and . The positive-feedback fraction is smaller than the negative-feedback fraction . Net feedback is negative, so the virtual short is valid.

  8. Answer: .

KEY IDEA

The output feeds back to both inputs: negative feedback through the – divider (fraction ) and positive feedback through the R-network (fraction ). Net feedback is negative, so the virtual short holds. It gives , and nodal analysis of the non-inverting network then fixes .

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to ignore the from node X to the output and treat the non-inverting side as a plain divider of the 1 V source. That gives and . Another is to see positive feedback and assume the op-amp saturates, without checking that the negative feedback () is stronger than the positive feedback ().
